This letter is part of our Conscious Consumerism 101 series, a guide to help you make empowered, ethical choices when shopping. Today, a look into sustainable fashion.
Have you noticed your favorite bloggers tagging more and more outfits with #sustainablefashion? What about the influx of fashionistas singing the praises of secondhand clothes? You’re not imagining things: we’re in the midst of a shopping revolution. As more consumers learn more about the challenging human and environmental costs of the fast fashion industry, the sustainable fashion movement continues to grow in its place. So what, exactly, makes an outfit or accessory sustainable? And how can you know whether your purchase makes a positive impact?
This post is the first in our Conscious Consumerism 101 series, a guide to help you make empowered, ethical choices when shopping and contributing to buying the change you want to see. Up first, the complex world of Fair Trade.
What comes to mind when you hear the phrase fair trade? Those two buzzy little words have changed a lot about how we view consumerism. You might know these words stand for something positive, but what do they actually mean? And how can they make a difference in your purchasing decisions?

We wouldn’t be where we are without our hardworking staff. ESPECIALLY our interns! For the next month, we’ve decided to showcase our five interns and the incredible work they do behind the scenes.
We’re ending our intern series with Mariya Khan, our resident intern since we started! Mariya, who graduated in May from The George Washington University, has helped us develop our social media presence. She’s the voice behind our Twitter and Facebook accounts, writes some of our blog posts (such as this intern series!), and attends D.C.-area pop-up events. Her experiences at TO THE MARKET shaped her career aspirations, and she’s excited to see how we will continue to grow.

Delilah Harvey is studying PR & Strategic Communications at American University and started interning with us this summer. Our founder/CEO Jane Mosbacher Morris actually launched TO THE MARKET at a conference Delilah’s mom produced! Since then, Delilah has been interested in our mission and even dreams of owning her own sustainable clothing line.
